Expired testing kits found at site where patients possibly exposed to hepatitis, HIV

Expired glucose meter testing kits were found during an inspection of one of the Dean Clinic sites where a diabetes nurse educator potentially exposed 2,345 patients to hepatitis and HIV, according to a report released Thursday. The kits could have caused patients to receive inaccurate treatment, but there is no evidence that occurred, said Stephanie Smiley, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services. FDA, firm battle over tainted wipes

Federal regulators say a New York medical products maker promised in June to recall alcohol pads it found contaminated with a potentially deadly bacterium, but then failed to launch that recall for nearly four months. The bacterium killed a 2-year-old Houston boy last year. In a federal lawsuit, the boy's family alleges he was sickened by a sterile alcohol pad made by Wisconsin-based Triad Group, which was raided by U.S. marshals in April. (JOURNAL SENTINEL, 9/29)

Health insurance premiums up 9%, study says

The cost of health insurance provided by an employer now averages $15,073 a year for a family. That's an increase of 9% this year. Since 1999, the cost of insurance has risen 168%, compared with 38% for general inflation. Deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses also have increased… The increase also is in line with averages for southeast Wisconsin based on a survey by HCTrends released in August.
