Board recommends closing high risk pool at end of year

The Health Insurance Risk-Sharing Plan Authority Board of Directors officially recommended Wednesday closing the state's high risk pool at the end of the year. Smith: It's 'untrue' that rejected federal Medicaid money goes to other states

Outgoing Department of Health Services Secretary Dennis Smith, who served as President George W. Bush's Medicaid chief, denied a claim Tuesday made by advocates and an increasing number of Republican governors that states that don't choose the federal health reform law's Medicaid expansion are subsidizing those that do. Health First Wisconsin doesn't want smokers penalized

Health First Wisconsin, home of Smoke Free Wisconsin, is asking lawmakers to lay off state smokers. It's hoping to reverse a provision in Governor Scott Walker's budget bill that hits state employees who use tobacco products with a $50 per month premium surcharge. (WHN, 2/27)

Shift from Medicaid 'of good value,' outgoing health secretary says

The 87,000 parents who would be shifted from Medicaid to a health insurance exchange under Gov. Scott Walker's budget "will see the value of what's being offered" and sign up, outgoing health services secretary Dennis Smith said Tuesday. The parents, who make just above the poverty level, would face monthly premiums starting at $19 a month, Smith said. That doesn't include out-of-pocket costs for care, estimated at $1,850 to $4,200 a year. (WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL, 2/27)

Sen. Jon Erpenbach says he'll work with GOP on Medicaid deal

Democratic state Sen. Jon Erpenbach said Tuesday that he and some of his Republican colleagues have discussed temporarily accepting a federally funded expansion of Medicaid against the wishes of GOP Gov. Scott Walker. Erpenbach talked about the possible deal during the Wisconsin HealthWatch conference, a meeting of policy makers, consumer advocates, and health care industry representatives. Erpenbach was on a panel of Democratic lawmakers, all of whom roundly criticized Walker's recent moves to reject key portions of the federal health care overhaul law. (AP, 2/27)
