Aspirus among first in country to implement new heart stent to benefit cardiac patients

Advanced technology promotes faster healing and promises fewer complications

WAUSAU, Wis. – Doctors are now treating patients at Aspirus Heart & Vascular with a newly approved SYNERGY™ Coronary Stent, making them among the first patients in the nation to benefit from this highly anticipated new technology to treat heart disease.

“The SYNERGY stent is a leading-edge treatment we are able to deliver to our patients,” said Timothy Grady, DO, FACC, cardiologist with Aspirus Heart & Vascular. “This next generation heart stent promotes faster healing, may decrease medication use and helps lower the risk of complications.”

Stents are tiny mesh tubes doctors use to prop open clogged arteries, allowing blood to flow freely to the heart. The SYNERGY Stent has a bioabsorbable polymer that breaks down and is fully absorbed after the drug is released. Faster healing is supported by eliminating permanent polymer exposure, which has been associated with complications such as blood clots and recurrence of vessel narrowing.

Manufactured by Boston Scientific and approved by the Food and Drug Administration in October, the SYNERGY stent has been in development for more than 10 years and studied in more than 15,000 patients worldwide.
