Milwaukee, WI – Jeffrey Stearns, MD, Director of Medical Education at Aurora Health Care, was recently honored at the annual meeting of the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC). Dr. Stearns was presented the esteemed Weinberg Award at a special dinner held March 28th in San Diego, California. The Weinberg Award is presented on an annual basis to an individual member who best exemplifies the energy and commitment of AIAMC founder Dr. Ethel Weinberg. The person selected for this prestigious honor must demonstrate excellence in providing:

  • Noted leadership in academic medicine, both locally and nationally;
  • Advocacy for the independent academic medical center by articulating its unique role and contributions;
  • A vision for the future of academic medicine in the independent academic medical center.

Dr. Stearns’s illustrious career spans more than 35 years; 14 of those years with Aurora as Associate Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Associate Dean of the Milwaukee Academic Campus of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and as Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education for Aurora Health care.  His accomplishments are many and include the development of the Rural Medical Education Program, which continues today with 60% of its graduates remaining in rural Illinois — 85% practicing primary care.  Further, in collaboration with the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration), he led the $1.95 million Family Medicine Curriculum Resources project, resulting in resources for advancing medical student education in primary care.   Finally, he is a past recipient of the Society of Teacher of Family Medicine’s Innovation Program Award in honor of his excellence in the development of an original education program for family practice that had significant, positive impact on family medicine education.

Dr. Stearns was nominated by Aurora Health Care colleagues Ruric (Andy) Anderson, MD, Sr. Vice President, Academic Affairs, and Deb Simpson, PhD, Medical Education Program Director.  Drs. Anderson and Simpson stated, “Jeff Stearns is a firm believer that independent academic medical centers can do things that others can only hope to do.”  They continued, “He has worked to locally and nationally align medical education across the continuum, partner with the community to improve health, and place learners in clinical environments that live and breathe high quality, safe, team-based care for patients.”

The Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers is a national membership organization made up of 80 major academic medical centers and health systems committed to quality patient care, medical education and research. AIAMC members regard medical education and research as strategic assets in providing patient-centered care; operate independently of medical school ownership or governance while maintaining major medical school affiliations; care for a patient population that mirrors their local communities; and provide teaching and research that is innovative, applicable to practice and community responsive. For more information on the AIAMC and its membership, visit www.aiamc.org.
