Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire earns American College of Cardiology award for cardiac care

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award for heart care in 2014. The Eau Claire hospital is one of only 139 nationwide to receive the honor.

The award recognizes commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the ACTION Registry–GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award, hospitals consistently must follow treatment guidelines for four consecutive quarters and meet a performance standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

“We’re very proud of our cardiovascular and Emergency Department teams who work extremely hard to follow these heart attack protocols that improve the lives of some of our most seriously ill patients,” says D. Fearghas O’Cochlain, M.D., interventional cardiologist at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

“The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association commend Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols,” says James Jollis, M.D., registry chair and professor of medicine and radiology at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C. Following the guidelines “is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients.”

The registry is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association with partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.
