MCW-Green Bay receives $250,000 Impact Grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation
The Green Bay Packers Foundation has awarded a $250,000 Staff Impact Grant to the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW)-Green Bay to fund student scholarships. The grant is a matching grant, requiring MCW-Green Bay to raise an additional $250,000 in order to secure the donation, creating a $500,000 impact.
“We think MCW-Green Bay is going to have a significant impact. It is hard to imagine anything that will have a bigger impact on our community over the next 5-10 years. That is why we wanted to award them this grant,” said Mark Murphy, Green Bay Packers president and CEO. “We have been in support of opening a medical college in Green Bay since our initial grant in 2013 designated for curriculum development.”
The MCW-Green Bay campus features a three-year Discovery curriculum, a calendar-efficient schedule spanning 134-weeks, allowing students to complete their medical school experience in only three years. MCW-Green Bay partners with the best academic and medical institutions in the area to bring students cutting-edge classroom technology and labs, exceptional clinical education experiences and individualized learning.
“We are honored to be a recipient of the Green Bay Packers Foundation Staff Impact Grant,” said Matthew L. Hunsaker, MD, campus dean of MCW-Green Bay. “There is a significant financial commitment made by those who choose to enter the field of medicine, and scholarships like the ones that will be funded by this grant will assist in making medical school a reality for prospective students who may have found cost to be an obstacle.”
The Green Bay Packers Foundation has distributed more than $4 million for charitable purposes since it was established in 1986 by Judge Robert J. Parins, then-president of the Packers Corporation. The Foundation awarded 225 grants in 2014 totaling $1.1 million. A component of the Green Bay Packers Give Back program, the grants, combined with other Green Bay Packers charity endeavors, contributes to a comprehensive Packers charity impact that was in excess of $7 million in the past year.
The Green Bay Packers Foundation Trustees include Charlie Lieb (chairman), Tom Arndt, Valerie Daniels-Carter, Rick Chernick, Ricardo Diaz, Terry Fulwiler, Jerry Ganoni, Mark McMullen, Tom Olson and John Zakowski. Bobbi Jo Eisenreich is the secretary of the Foundation. Green Bay Packers Director Emeritus, Larry Weyers, serves as a member of the MCW-Green Bay Community Advisory Board.
About the Medical College of Wisconsin
The Medical College of Wisconsin is the state’s only private medical school and health sciences graduate school. Founded in 1893, it is dedicated to leadership and excellence in education, patient care, research and community engagement. More than 1,200 students are enrolled in MCW’s medical school and graduate school programs in Milwaukee, and 26 medical students are enrolled at MCW-Green Bay. A regional medical education campus is scheduled to open in Central Wisconsin in 2016. MCW’s School of Pharmacy will open in 2017 or 2018 with an initial class size of 60 students. A major national research center, MCW is the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and second largest in Wisconsin. In FY 2013-14, faculty received approximately $154 million in external support for research, teaching, training and related purposes, of which approximately $138 million is for research. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Annually, MCW faculty direct or collaborate on more than 2,000 research studies, including clinical trials. Additionally, more than 1,350 physicians provide care in virtually every specialty of medicine for more than 425,000 patients annually.
