MARSHFIELD – Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc., received more than 1,000 new members on the final day of open enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplace and applications continue to arrive.

The Health Insurance Marketplace’s first enrollment officially ended March 31. Fearing there could be many last-minute applications that could overwhelm the system that day, the federal government announced it would honor applications completed by April 15 if applicants made an attempt to enroll. The federal website did have problems that day.

“We received about 500 enrollments totaling around 1,000 members on the last day,” said Marty Anderson, director of Marketing-Consumer Products. “It’s not easing up much, either. Since then we’ve received 500 applications from the Health Insurance Marketplace even though open enrollment was technically closed.”

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created a special enrollment period for consumers who were “in line” but did not complete the enrollment process in time. Provided they meet CMS criteria, complete applications and make their first premium payment by April 15, these “in-line” applicants will have coverage effective May 1.

Since enrollment began last October, about 27,000 Wisconsinites have purchased Security Health Plan coverage that complies with the Affordable Care Act, Anderson said.
