Wisconsin’s two leading public health member associations – the Wisconsin Association of Local Health Departments and Boards (WALHDAB) and the Wisconsin Public Health Association (WPHA) – applaud the efforts of the UW Population Health Institute in publishing the www.improvingwihealth.org website.  The website is a central location to find out what communities across Wisconsin are doing to improve health locally.  The site is searchable by topic (e.g., obesity or alcohol prevention) and also by county, where users of the site can find links to hospitals and local health departments working on common health priority areas.

“Increasing connections between communities on what works to improve population health can only benefit the residents of those communities,” stated Sara Finger, WPHA President.

WALHDAB has recently developed tools and resources that can help communities conduct assessments, create health improvement plans, and then implement and evaluate those plans.  The first versions of those tools are available online.  “The Population Health Institute’s new website offers an additional approach for communities to address complex local public health priorities,” offered Shelley Hersil, Health Officer in Lincoln County and Co-President of WALHDAB.

With 88 local health departments in the state, as well as hundreds of community partners working to address issues like access to care, mental health, and poverty, this new website can provide easy access to new ideas, resources, and strategies that can help improve health in local communities.

The Wisconsin Association of Local Health Departments and Boards is the statewide leader and voice for local governmental public health.  The Wisconsin Public Health Association builds a healthier, safer Wisconsin through policy and partnership.  More information is available at www.walhdab.org and www.wpha.org.
