Wisconsin shines at the forefront of Health IT

MetaStar Celebrates National Health IT Week on September 15-19, 2014

Madison, Wisconsin — Health information technology improves the quality of health care delivery, increases patient safety, decreases medical errors, and strengthens the interaction between patients and health care providers.

To mark the important role health information technology plays in improving health care delivery in America, MetaStar and others across the U.S. have joined together to celebrate National Health Information Technology (NHIT) Week. The theme this year is One Voice, One Vision: Transforming Health and Care.

MetaStar is home to the Wisconsin Health Information Technology Extension Center (WHITEC), which offers  assistance to health care organizations as they adopt and meaningfully use certified electronic health record (EHR) technology. WHITEC also offers security risk assessments as organizations strive to keep up with the legal requirements to maintain the security of electronic protected health information.

Wisconsin health care providers have high rates of participation in the federal Electronic Health Record Incentive Program, which offers payments for meeting “meaningful use” standards and requirements.

In Wisconsin:

  • 100 percent (125) of eligible hospitals have adopted certified EHR technology
  • 92 percent (115) of eligible hospitals are meaningful users of EHRs according to the federal requirements
  • 85% of office-based physicians have adopted certified EHR technology
  • 54 percent (7,925) of eligible professionals are meaningful users of EHRs according to the federal requirements

According to the most recent data from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Wisconsin is ranked eighth in the country for hospitals that have received an incentive payment and fourth for eligible professionals.

“Our participation in National Health IT Week highlights MetaStar’s commitment to ensure health information technology is integrated, interoperable, and intelligently deployed to provide the best patient outcomes,” said Jesi Wang, WHITEC Project Director. “We are pleased to see Wisconsin continue to be at the forefront of health IT adoption and meaningful use.”
