Head of VA health system shares personal connection with Madison hospital

After he got the call from the White House asking him to lead the nation's largest healthcare system, Dr. David Shulkin looked up at his grandfather's picture. It's one of the few photos he has of Joseph Shulkin, who was the first pharmacist at the Madison veterans hospital. Dressed in a white coat, he uses a pestle and mortar to crush and mix the ingredients of a medication. David Shulkin, under secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, was confirmed in June 2015. (WHN, 6/6)
