Determined to save lives and end breast cancer forever, the Central Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen has awarded 4 grants totaling nearly $167,500 to programs focused on helping women in the Affiliate’s seven-county service area to fight breast cancer at every stage.
“On a four years cycle, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Affiliate conducts a Community Profile to determine the needs in our community service area. Grant priorities for this funding cycle included educating women throughout our community about their risk for breast cancer, making breast screenings more accessible, and outreach to groups who are at highest risk, but do not get screened,” said Patty Krug, Grants Chair for the Central Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen.
In 2012, Komen Central Wisconsin funded programs which provided nearly 1,500 women in our 7-county service area with life-saving breast cancer screenings, treatment and education. From the mammograms funded by Komen Central Wisconsin last year alone, breast cancer was detected in more women. Early detection is the key to reducing breast cancer mortality in Wisconsin – which ranks 17th in the nation in breast cancer mortality*. When treated early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.
The Komen Central Wisconsin Affiliate raises funds through generous donations and hosting annual fundraising events like the annual In the Pink Benefit held in October and Race for the Cure®, which is scheduled for Sunday, August 11th in downtown Wausau. Registration for the race opened online on April 23rd.
The following programs have been selected for 2013 Komen Central Wisconsin grant slate funding by an independent grant panel through a competitive application and review process.
