First Lady recognizes Oregon schools for promoting active lifestyles

MADISON- Oregon students are real movers.  They’re so active that five schools in the Oregon School District have received national awards from the “Let’s Move! Active Schools” initiative.  The program is part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign.

American Family Children’s Hospital is part of the Healthy Kids Collaborative, formerly the Childhood Obesity Prevention Collaborative, which worked with Oregon schools to increase students’ activity and movement.

The schools that were recognized are Brooklyn, Netherwood Knoll and Prairie View Elementary Schools, Rome Corners Intermediate School and Oregon Middle School.

“This recognition points to the importance of active and healthy lifestyles for our students,” said Oregon School District Superintendent Brian Busler. “We are delighted to be recognized by the First Lady.”

The nationally recognized schools had to meet benchmarks in five areas: physical education, physical activity before and after school, physical activity during school, staff involvement and family and community engagement.  The award recognizes the schools’ commitment to include at least 60 minutes of physical activity before, during and after school.

“Active learners are better learners,” said Julia Stanley, Healthy Kids Collaborative director at American Family Children’s Hospital.  “Studies have shown that active kids have higher test scores, improved attendance, better behavior in class and improved leadership and interpersonal skills.”

The Healthy Kids Collaborative has more than 150 partners and develops and advances policies to improve the physical activity and nutrition environment for Dane County children and families.  To learn more about the collaborative, go to www.healthykidsdane.org.
