Milwaukee – Aurora Health Care has been honored with a Central City Business Award from the Milwaukee Business Journal, reflecting the health care system’s commitment to serving Milwaukee’s central city residents. The awards program, held annually, recognized Aurora in the Community Impact category.
“Our caregivers who serve central city neighborhoods have a true passion for helping people live well,” said John Daniels, chairman of the Aurora board of directors, who accepted the award on Aurora’s behalf. “It is gratifying to see their dedication recognized. They are making the community a better place to live, work and play.”
Aurora Sinai Medical Center was acknowledged as being the sole remaining hospital in downtown Milwaukee – as recently as 20 years ago, there were eight. In 2015, Aurora Sinai had more than 175,000 outpatient visits and more than 57,000 patients coming through the emergency department. The hospital is also home to a neonatal intensive care unit and a sexual assault treatment center.
“Aurora Sinai has always been, and continues to be, an integral hub for the delivery of health care that many people rely upon,” said Carolynn Glocka, president of Aurora Sinai, adding that the hospital has more than 1,200 caregivers on staff. “Our caregivers rank among the best anywhere, and they’re proud to build on their hospital’s legacy by providing high quality care, each and every day.”
In addition to Aurora Sinai, the award recognized medical care that Aurora offers in neighborhoods, with locations that include the Walker’s Point Community Clinic and Aurora Health Center-Midtown. At The Healing Center, Aurora offers support, advocacy and education for the survivors of sexual abuse and assault. Plus, Aurora Family Service provides marriage and family counseling, mental health and advocacy services and referrals to medical specialists.
Furthermore, Aurora was also recognized for its ongoing collaboration with community organizations to help meet needs. Last year, Aurora announced the Better Together Fund, which provided $10 million to help dozens of organizations expand access to primary care and behavioral health services, as well as sexual assault and domestic violence prevention and treatment programs.
“Part of meeting challenges of the central city is taking the opportunity to collaborate with others,” Daniels said. “Because we’re extending what these organizations can do – allowing them to add staff, increase training, or build out clinic space – we truly are better together. We’re better able to meet needs of a diverse community.”
In addition to the services offered at Aurora Sinai and the significant impact Aurora is having on other community partners through the Better Together Fund, the award recognized Aurora’s active engagement in improving neighborhoods. For example, Aurora is a founding institution with Near West Side Partners, which is laying the groundwork for commercial expansion by promoting the neighborhood’s many assets.
Aurora has also demonstrated its commitment to the Walker’s Point neighborhood. In 2010, Aurora located its headquarters in the neighborhood, along with its executive leadership team, and in 2015 expanded its presence there by occupying additional office space.
