Judge blocks Trump administration from terminating student mental health grants

A federal judge this week temporarily blocked the Trump administration from ending grants to boost the school-based mental health workforce, including in Wisconsin.

The U.S. Department of Education sought last year to cancel the grants as they supported training programs for mental health workers that encouraged them to examine the impact of racism. Wisconsin and other states sued and restored the funding.

In June, the administration said it planned to terminate some or all of the grants under a different federal law, prompting Wisconsin and others to sue again.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Department of Public Instruction received more than $12.5 million through the grants to support training the school-based mental health workforce.
