A system in crisis: Reforming emergency detention

March 11, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

A coalition of law enforcement, healthcare providers and counties recently released a framework on how to reform the state’s complex mental health crisis system.

That includes a focus in changing the emergency detention process, which can sometimes lead to law enforcement transporting those in crisis across the state if there aren’t available psychiatric beds.

A Wisconsin Health News panel will take a deep dive into the issues surrounding emergency detention and plans to reform it.

Panelists:

  • Attorney General Josh Kaul
  • Sen. Kathy Bernier, R-Lake Hallie
  • Pete Carlson, President, Advocate Aurora Behavioral Health Services
  • Todd Campbell, Division Administrator, Adult Community Services Division, Dane County Department of Human Services
  • Kit Kerschensteiner, Director of Legal and Advocacy Services, Disability Rights Wisconsin
  • Kim Freeman, Certified Peer Specialist
