Wisconsin Medical Society: Nursing board proposes new nursing school approval, disciplinary action rules

The Board of Nursing put forward two clearinghouse rule changes that would update the board’s ability to approve new schools of nursing as well as specify the grounds for punishing nurses.

The first rule change submitted to the Assembly Committee on Health stems from the nursing board’s first comprehensive review of it school approval process since 1989. The board requested updating its process to better fit current education standards for nursing schools and the modern technologies for providing education.

The other rule change redefines how the board constitutes grounds for discipline among certified nurses. The new grounds for limiting, suspending, revoking or denying renewal of a nursing license or certificate include breaking laws relating to the practice of nursing, confidentiality violations, misconduct, fraud and other transgressions.
