Hess: One more reason for ridiculously high health care costs

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard there is a drug available that has been proven to stop pregnant women from going into premature labor. And I’m sure you’ve also heard the cost of that drug, which is nothing more than a form of progesterone, is about to skyrocket from $10 to $20 a dose to $1,500 a dose thanks to St. Louis-based KV Pharmaceutical getting a seven-year patent to sell the drug exclusively under the brand name Makena.
