(MADISON, Wis.) –In 2012, studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found more than one-third of our nation’s children and adolescents were overweight or obese.

In an effort to encourage healthy and active lifestyles among our youth, Meriter-UnityPoint Health is proud to introduce the Meriter Mighty Kids Program, a running class for kids ages 5-14.

“Meriter’s Mighty Kids is a great way to keep our kids happy and healthy this summer,” said Dr. Ronald Grant, Meriter-UnityPoint Health pediatric hospitalist. “We hope this program will encourage all participants to continue an active lifestyle well beyond this nine-week program.”

Meriter Mighty Kids is free and meets once a week. It focuses on fun running activities that keep kids moving and prepares them for the Henry Vilas Zoo’s Roo Run Run on Sunday, September 28. Kids who attend six of the nine sessions will qualify for a free entry into the Roo Run Run (distances: ¼ mile, ½ mile or 1 mile).

The program will take place 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. every Tuesday from July 29th to September 23rd. It will be located in Edward Klief Park at 1200 Milton St., near Meriter Hospital.

Kids should wear running clothes and shoes and be sure to bring a water bottle. Parents are welcome to stay and help with the activities. Register your kids today at meriter.com/classes.
