Alverno expands nursing program

Alverno College is expanding its Master of Science in Nursing program by launching a new Family Nurse Practitioner track in fall of 2011. The track includes 39 credits. Students can complete the master’s level program in five full-time semesters or in as few as seven semesters part time. (MILWAUKEE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/2)

Clinics team up with churches to fight hypertension

Julia Means, a parish nurse for Columbia St. Mary's Health System, found herself questioning her work after two men in their 40s had strokes. She had screened both of them for high blood pressure. Means eventually proposed setting up a community clinic to treat and manage high blood pressure for people without health insurance. (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 6/1)

Wisconsin Republican Rep. Michelle Litjens supports abortion limits, will author Assembly bill

The legislation hasn’t been written yet, but battle lines are already forming over an abortion bill expected to be introduced in the state Legislature in September. State Rep. Michelle Litjens R-town of Vinland, has signed on as the Assembly author of the Woman’s Protection Act, which supporters such as Wisconsin Right To Life say would combat financial, emotional or relationship threats that can make women feel they have no option other than abortion.
