JANESVILLE, WI– The Mercy Regional Cancer Center in Janesville has been granted an Outstanding Achievement Award by Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. The award was only given to a select group of 106 accredited cancer programs across the U.S. Mercy’s cancer program receives this award for its demonstrated commitment in cancer services, scope of high quality care and through extensive studies indicating its implemented changes improve patient outcomes and access to care.

“Mercy’s cancer program is not only consistently nationally accredited, but it also receives awards for exceeding all of the standards for cancer care,” said B.K. Wasiljew, MD, general surgeon and chair of the Mercy Cancer Committee. “It should be reassuring for residents of Rock County and the surrounding areas in knowing they can and will receive the highest level of cancer care.”

Mercy’s cancer program has received the Outstanding Achievement Award for three consecutive surveys in 2005, 2008 and 2011. Mercy Regional Cancer Center has been accredited by the CoC since 1998.

“I am so proud of the entire cancer program and all of the people involved who provide state-of-the-art cancer treatment right here at home,” Wasiljew adds.

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. Its membership includes fellows of the American College of Surgeons and representatives of 49 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.
