WDA Foundation awards over $51,000 to 15 dental health programs

The Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation has announced $51,587 in grants and designated funding to 15 programs that bring oral health care to low-income Wisconsin residents and provide other dentistry-related services.

The AIDS Network in Madison will use its $5,000 gift to purchase dental clinic supplies and cover laboratory fees.

In Milwaukee, the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin will use a $5,000 award to help pay for patients’ prosthodontic procedures and subsequent dentures.

Bread of Healing Clinic serves more than 1,500 uninsured patients from Milwaukee’s north central neighborhoods each year. The clinic’s $3,000 grant will be used to purchase oral hygiene education materials and dental equipment.

Brown County Oral Health Partnership in Green Bay will use its $3,500 grant to purchase dental supplies and restorative materials necessary to provide care to adults with developmental disabilities and school-based care to low-income children.

Community Dental Clinic of Jefferson County will receive $4,000 toward the purchase of much-needed consumable supplies. Located in Fort Atkinson and staffed by volunteer dentists, 60 percent of clinic patients are children from low-income families.

Ministry Door County Medical Center Dental Clinic in Sturgeon Bay has been providing free oral health care to young people in Door and Kewaunee counties since 1999. A $1,637 grant will help with equipment purchases.

HealthNet of Rock County in Janesville has served low-income and uninsured county residents since 2007. The clinic, which is staffed by volunteer dentists, will use its $3,000 foundation grant to purchase equipment and supplies.

Healthy Smiles for Portage County “Seal-A-Smile” has provided dental screenings, sealants and fluoride applications to area second-graders for 12 years. A $750 foundation grant will help with purchases of equipment, sealant supplies, toothbrushes and educational brochures.

Rawhide Inc. in New London is a nonprofit, residential care center for troubled teen boys. The young residents will benefit from $4,000 in personal oral hygiene supplies and dental care.

Smiles for Sister Lucille Program of St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care in Milwaukee will use its $2,000 grant to help improve the dental hygiene, home care and overall health of the children, adults with disabilities and frail elderly that it serves.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Dental Clinic will use a $5,000 grant to purchase new equipment. The largely-volunteer clinic provides free dental services to low-income children and adults from Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine and Waukesha counties.

Tri-County Community Dental Clinic, which provides dental care to underserved residents of Calumet, Outagamie and Winnebago counties, will receive $5,000 for supplies. Volunteer dentists, hygienists and assistants are instrumental in providing the much-needed care.

Several WDA programs also receive special funding from the WDA Foundation.

The fourth WDA Mission of Mercy, which the foundation co-hosted with the WDA in late June in Madison, received $5,000 to help defray event-related costs. More than 1,800 volunteers delivered $1.75 million in care over two days during 3,595 patient visits.

The WDA Foundation’s Donated Dental Services program will use a $3,000 gift to help provide comprehensive dental care at no charge to Wisconsin adults who cannot work due to a permanent disability, chronic illness or advanced age, and whose needs are not met by public aid programs.

Some $1,700 in American Dental Association and WDA educational materials will be made available to first-year Marquette University School of Dentistry students at orientation.

In just the past 10 years alone, the WDA Foundation has helped Wisconsin residents by awarding more than $450,000 in oral health program grants and scholarships to dental and dental hygiene students.
