Jefferson County health panel backs development

The Wisconsin College of Osteopathic Medicine earned another vote of confidence Wednesday as the Jefferson County Board of Health cautiously approved a resolution supporting the development. The resolution of support, the same one passed by the Jefferson County Economic Development Consortium and the Human Services Board, will come before the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, March 12. It requests that the board take the steps necessary to assist the college with any future planning, feasibility and logistical issues in order to bring the project to eventual completion. Epic not invited to join new alliance of EHR vendors

An Epic Systems spokesman says the Verona-based company wasn't initially invited to join a new alliance of electronic health record vendors aimed at promoting health care data interoperability. The CommonWell Health Alliance, which launched earlier this week, plans to promote and certify a national infrastructure with common standards and policies. Founding members include Cerner, Allscripts, athenahealth, Greenway, McKesson, and RelayHealth. (WHN, 3/7)

State considering self-insured model for state employees

The state of Wisconsin has hired Deloitte Consulting to find out how much it would save, or cost, to move to a self-insured model for state employees. Deloitte is contacting health plans to gauge their interest in "an administrative services only" contract and get their take on how costs and administrative fees would change under the new arrangement. Female mortality rising in several Wisconsin counties

While death rates generally have fallen in the U.S. over the past two decades, drilling down county-by-county reveals a dramatically different picture for women. Female death rates actually rose in 43% of U.S. counties between 1992 and 2006, including a swath of central and northern Wisconsin, according to a University of Wisconsin-Madison Population Health Institute study published Monday in the journal Health Affairs. Fluoride debate reviving in rural parts of state
