Women’s Health Supporters Unite at 2013 Wisconsin Women’s Health Policy Summit

Over 200 Stakeholders Convene to Educate, Empower, and Engage!

Madison– In celebration of National Women’s Health Week, the Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health (WAWH) is hosting its Fourth Annual Wisconsin Women’s Health Policy Summit today and tomorrow, May 8th and 9th, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. This event will bring together advocates, policy makers, health care providers, patients, survivors, educators, and students to learn about the current status of women’s health policy and discuss opportunities to mobilize Wisconsin toward better health, safety and economic security for women and families.

This year’s Summit will host over 200 attendees and over 60 organizational sponsors, uniting to create a common vision for women’s health in Wisconsin.  The theme of the 2013 Summit is Educate. Empower. Engage! and continues to address every woman at every age and stage of life.

“Now, more than ever, is the time to raise our voices and advocate for the health care Wisconsin women and families need and deserve,” said WAWH Executive Director, Sara Finger. “We are at a pivotal moment to make real change in Wisconsin and it is only with our collective voice that we can successfully do so.”

Recognizing the important role that advocacy plays in improving health outcomes for women, the Summit will focus on giving participants tools to ensure their voices, stories, and ideas are included in policy discussions about the health and well-being of women and families in Wisconsin.  A series of workshops on Thursday afternoon offer a wide variety of advocacy trainings and tools.

Highlights of the day and half long Summit include keynotes from Founding Dean of the UWM Zilber School of Public Health Magda Peck, leading American authority on bioethics Alta Charo, and Milwaukee Jewish Federation CEO Hannah Rosenthal.  Attendees will also hear presentations on the State Budget’s Impact on Wisconsin Women and Girls, Implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and patients who have turned experience into advocacy.

All attendees will receive a copy of the “2013-15 State Budget Impact on Wisconsin Women and Girls” report.

Over 60 organizations and businesses are serving as sponsors of this event. Major sponsors of the Summit include: Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, Meriter, Pfizer, CommunityConnect Health Plan, Department of Health Services, Hologic, Managed Health Service, and the Wisconsin Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association.
