Construction Begins at Site of New ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano

NEWS FROM THEDACARE™

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

August 20, 2013

On Monday heavy construction and excavation equipment moved onto the site of the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano at County B and Highway 22. According to Matt Peterson, project manager at The Boldt Co. of Appleton, the project’s general contractor and construction management firm, the first tasks are site preparation work. “We started with removal of trees and existing storm water ponds. This week we start excavation and site utility work, including bringing water mains, storm lines and sanitary lines to the property.” In October, concrete footings and foundations will be poured and the winter months will bring steel erection. The new hospital is slated to open in early 2015.

The new hospital is being built adjacent to the existing ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano clinic. Despite the construction, patients will continue to access the clinic via the regular parking lot and main entrance. Within the next two weeks, the staff entrance will be relocated to the west side of the building, said Peterson.

The community groundbreaking celebration for the new $50 million hospital was held in July, at which time architectural plans were being finalized. This week’s official start to heavy construction is an inspiring step for the entire community. “Together, we worked to build consensus and a sense of ownership in our new hospital. To see our efforts come to fruition for the benefit of future generations is both exciting and rewarding,” said Dorothy Erdmann, CEO of Shawano Medical Center.

Drivers are reminded to pay special attention to the busy intersection at County B and Highway 22 during both construction and the start of the new school year. “There will be a lot of activity in this area,” said Peterson. “Please be aware and alert. Be safe.”

Shawano Medical Center is a nonprofit hospital in Shawano. It serves 35,000 people in Shawano, Menominee, and surrounding counties. Shawano Medical Center includes a critical-access (25-bed) hospital, Rehabilitation Services, and Sports Medicine.
