Wisconsin's federal exchange draws older mix

The state's federally-facilitated health insurance exchange is so far attracting an older population, with 45 percent of the 40,752 Wisconsin residents who selected a plan through Dec. 28 falling between the ages of 55 and 64, according to new data released Monday by the Department of Health and Human Services. It's the first time HHS has reported basic demographic information. Wisconsin's rate of seniors signing up is the highest in the nation, tied with West Virginia and above the national average of 33 percent. Less than 20 percent of Wisconsin residents who selected a plan are between the ages of 18 and 34. The national average is 24 percent. (WHN, 1/14)

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which made it clear in a statement last week that the state's BadgerCare waiver isn't the long term solution it prefers, ended up compromising with the Department of Health Services on Transitional Medical Assistance. (WHN, 1/14)

Group seeks Medicare data to increase health care efficiency

The cost of treating similar asthma patients ranged from $98 to $1,535 for care delivered primarily in 2007 and 2008. The variation was just as pronounced for patients with diabetes, with the cost varying from $251 to $3,750, and for patients with high blood pressure, with the cost varying from $149 to $1,469... Yet many analyses of this sort contain a glaring hole: They don't include Medicare claims data, because rules written by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services effectively prevent their use. The Wisconsin Health Information Organization, founded about eight years ago, is hoping to change that. (JOURNAL SENTINEL, 1/13)

Free clinics' role uncertain with expanded health insurance coverage

Raising money for the Greater Milwaukee Free Clinic has never been easy, but this year is proving to be harder than most. The clinic — one of a dozen or so free clinics in the Milwaukee area — ended last year with an $18,000 shortfall in its $65,000 annual budget. The drop in support may stem from the uncertain role free clinics will play with the expansion of insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act. (JOURNAL SENTINEL, 1/9)
