UW Hospital and Clinics earns Magnet Recognition® again

MADISON- Following a thorough and lengthy review process by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics has been re-designated as a Magnet ® hospital.  The original designation was earned by the hospital in 2009.

“Magnet Recognition® is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a health care organization,” said UW Hospital President and CEO Donna Katen-Bahensky.

“I am proud of our nursing staff. This recognition is a true testament to their professionalism and dedication to quality patient and family-centered care.”

Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services, Chief Nursing Officer Beth Houlahan noted that it’s a great honor to repeat the achievement.

“Magnet is not an award, but a distinction that is earned and demonstrated over time,” said Houlahan. “Magnet achievement is in line with UW Hospital and Clinics values that center on the patient as well as the empowerment of nurses.”

Houlahan said nurses are essential and valued partners who are empowered to solve problems and identify improvements through a collaborative governance structure including the development and implementation of standards of nursing practice and nursing care. Ownership of nursing practice is exemplified through the twelve nursing councils across UW Hospital and Clinics.

The Magnet recognition means that patients can expect the highest-quality care.

“As a patient, a family member and partner, I have had first-hand experience with why UW Hospital has received the Magnet Recognition,” said patient and family advisor Susan Phillips.  “It has taken teamwork, perseverance and commitment to the highest quality standards of care to accomplish this goal.”

The ANCC said less than seven percent of hospitals in the U.S. attain Magnet status.
