Burlington, Wis. – Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Racine Community Foundation. The grant will help purchase additional fitness equipment and monitors for the hospital’s new cardiac rehabilitation program. The program aims to reduce readmissions and help more people get back to leading healthier lives.

“Our goal is to help more people have access to the critical care they need following a heart attack or other cardiac event,” said Lisa Just, president of Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington. “Thanks to the generosity of the Foundation and its supporters, more people in Racine County needing follow-up care after a cardiac event will be able to get expert advice and training close to home, and will be able to return to their daily lives more quickly.”

In 2013, Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington launched its cardiac rehab program to provide resources locally for people recovering from heart surgery or suffering a heart attack. Its multidisciplinary medical team includes registered nurses, an exercise physiologist, dietician and cardiologist/medical director, who collectively focus on treating both the physical and behavioral aspects of heart health within 12 months of the event. While the program has a capacity of seeing 48 people a day, morning classes are fully booked and has a wait list.

“We recognize this is a program the community is excited about and we are looking forward to growing it to meet their needs,” said Just.

Earlier this year, the hospital raised an additional $40,000 at its annual Crystal Ball gala to support the expansion of its cardiac rehab program. To learn more about cardiac rehabilitation programs offered through Aurora Health Care, visit www.aurora.org.
