Medical Society of Milwaukee County announces award winners 

Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel, MCW’s Dr. Earnestine Willis among recipients 

MILWAUKEE, WI – February 18, 2015 – The Medical Society of Milwaukee County (MSMC) an organization representing nearly 4,000 physicians across the Milwaukee community, today announced its community impact award winners. The winners will be recognized on March 7, 2015 during the society’s Leadership that Inspires dinner event at the Milwaukee Public Museum.

The Medical Society of Milwaukee County’s board of directors selected the award recipients.

The award categories and winners are:

Dr. Erastus B. Wolcott Distinguished Service Award

As founder of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County, Dr. Erastus B. Wolcott was described as “Eminent in the profession. A lover of humanity. Who delighted to serve.”  This award goes to Julie Schuller, MD, Executive Vice President, Clinical Affairs for the Sixteenth Street Community Clinic in Milwaukee.  Dr. Schuller carries on the legacy of the Medical Society’s founder through her steadfast commitment to champion the needs of Milwaukee’s underserved. As MSMC board president in 2014, she also led the Medical Society through its 2014 branding campaign “Powered by Physicians.  Compelled by Community.”

Health Care Champion Award

Prescription drug abuse is an epidemic.  It is devastating Milwaukee and Wisconsin families.  Compelled by the Community, this lead initiative for the Medical Society of Milwaukee County is also the top focus for Wisconsin Attorney General Brad D. Schimel. Schimel partners with the medical community, law enforcement, families, and others to reduce the number of deaths due to prescription drug abuse.

The Community Impact Award 

Dr. Earnestine Willis is renowned in Milwaukee as the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Underserved Children (CAUC), and Director of Health Equity and Urban Clinical Care Partnerships. For nearly three decades, Dr. Willis has worked tirelessly to address health disparities in Milwaukee through the development of successful community initiatives that include research, education, and community services.

Student Leadership Award

Megan Beck, a third year medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, is the recipient of this distinguishing recognition. She is a passionate advocate for the identification of victims of human sex trafficking in the Milwaukee healthcare setting.  She led the design of a survey of healthcare providers that pinpoints the learning points that will assist providers in identifying these victims.  She has led efforts at MCW to educate her peers and open discussions around the topic of human sex trafficking.   In addition she has advocated further education at both the state and national level.  She volunteers as a clinic coordinator and scheduler at the MCW Saturday morning free clinic on a regular basis.

“These award recipients are true community leaders,” says Kathy Schmitz, Executive Director of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County. “Their accomplishments have improved the quality of life for countless individuals and they’re deeply improving the health of our communities. They are inspirational leaders. The society is thrilled to recognize and present them with awards at our March 7, 2015 Leadership that Inspires event.”

The society’s annual awards program, this year on March 7 at the Milwaukee Public Museum, will give the public a chance to help the organization honor and recognize the award recipients and learn more about the Medical Society of Milwaukee County’s work with physicians and in the community.

Schmitz says the theme, Leadership That Inspires, symbolizes the essence of those leading and improving community’s health in Milwaukee.
