HSHS: Hospital CFO earns Root Award

Eau Claire, WI – David Nelson, Chief Financial Officer at HSHS Sacred Heart & St. Joseph’s hospitals, received the hospitals’ “Root Award” on February 20 at the hospitals’ Division Leadership Academy. The Division Leadership Academy is a quarterly meeting with hospital leaders from Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals.

The award, which is given twice a year to an outstanding leader at either hospital, is a shadow box containing the portion of an oak tree from the Hospital Sisters’ vegetable garden in Eau Claire. The trunk represents strength, sustained organic growth and “a newbeginning for God’s people.” As it grew in the Sisters’ garden, this portion of the tree trunk supported two large strong branches, which is a representation of the two hospitals.

Nelson joined the hospitals in 2013. He earned his master’s in healthcare administration from the University of Minnesota, and his bachelor’s in accountancy from the University of Mississippi. Nelson is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and is a fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He also has served as a Wisconsin State Forward Award (State Baldrige Quality Award) examiner and has been a faculty member for Rush University School of Health Management and University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Nelson is also a disaster response team and disaster liaison volunteer with the American Red Cross and a member of the Eau Claire Kiwanis.
