Steinhafels Furniture contracts with Integrated Health Network of Wisconsin

Steinhafels, Inc., a major Wisconsin furniture retailer, has contracted with Integrated Health Network of Wisconsin (IHN) to be the primary provider network for Steinhafels’ self-funded employee health benefit plan. IHN is a clinically integrated network of major health care systems and the Medical College of Wisconsin. The agreement became effective January 1, 2015.

The contract with IHN is part of Steinhafels’ initiative to control rising health care costs for its employees while improving outcomes and increasing quality, according to Steinhafels’ Senior Human Resources Manager Lynda Malmberg, “I believe use of IHN’s clinically integrated model should provide significant health care savings per employee as compared to Milwaukee-area averages,” said Malmberg. “Their advanced care approach and potential to improve employee health while keeping care affordable were key drivers in our decision to feature IHN in our plan.”

“We are pleased that Steinhafels has chosen to partner with us as they forge a new, customized way to offer higher quality health care for their employees while working toward significant long-term savings,” said IHN CEO Kurt Janavitz. “It is a bold step. We applaud them and are eager work with them to help achieve their goals.”

With IHN as its primary provider network, Steinhafels’ employees in the Milwaukee and Appleton areas may choose to receive their health care through IHN’s network of 42 hospitals, 500 clinics and more than 5,000 physicians spanning northern, western, central and eastern Wisconsin.

The Steinhafels agreement represents one of more than 20 value-based contracts IHN has negotiated with employers and insurance providers on behalf of its network members, who share in cost savings when quality care is offered more efficiently. IHN’s current network members include Agnesian HealthCare, Columbia St. Mary’s, Froedtert Health, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Hospital Sisters Health System, Ministry Health Care, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare and many independent physician partners. The network now impacts more than 2.5 million lives.

Based in Wisconsin, Steinhafels is the fastest growing furniture and mattress retailer in the state and has a major presence in northern Illinois. Steinhafels’ family-owned business now includes 19 furniture and mattress stores, including an Oak Creek, Wisconsin location that opened in mid-February.

Steinhafels is one of a growing number of employers that has developed a selffunded, or self-insured, health benefit plan – one in which the employer assumes partial financial risk for providing benefits to its employees, rather than obtaining medical coverage through an insurance carrier. Self-funding can be a strategy for customizing components of health care coverage for a company and controlling the costs of the plan.
