Vaping prevention: Stipends awarded to Wisconsin organizations

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Clinic Health System and Security Health Plan have announced recipients of Youth E-Cigarette (Vaping) Prevention stipends.

Awardees include a broad cross-section of organizations including human service agencies, law enforcement, public health departments and educational institutions. Project areas cover community awareness events, coordination with state policy initiatives, curriculum development and implementation of youth-led action plans to address e-cigarette use in school.

Stakes surrounding this health issue appear to be rising since Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services (DHS) issued a cautionary advisory about e-cigarette use in January. Last week, DHS identified eight cases of severe pulmonary disease among adolescents being investigated for potential connections to e-cigarette use. All patients reported vaping in the weeks and months prior to hospital admission.

“Our Health System and Security Health Plan have grown increasingly concerned about health implications of e-cigarette use among our youth,” said Jay Shrader, the Health System’s vice president of Community Health and Wellness. “Discussions with our community and state agency partners motivated us to mobilize and extend these resources to address this concern now. Recent events highlight the sense of urgency we all share.”
