Gov. Tony Evers directed the Department of Natural Resource to close 40 state parks, forests and recreational areas at the end of Thursday until further notice.

Evers said he wanted to keep parks open for the public to enjoy.

“Unfortunately, growing difficulty with ensuring social distancing compliance, dwindling cleaning supplies and mounting trash are some of the challenges faced by our state parks staff,” he said in a statement. “We have to address the growing public health and safety concern and protect Wisconsinites.”

Evers’ statement noted more in the state may have to close if the public doesn’t follow social distancing guidelines and vandalizes property.

A list of the closed areas is here.
