Over 221,000 Wisconsinites Enroll in Health Coverage on Healthcare.gov

Madison, Wis. —  Today, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that during the recent Open Enrollment Period, 221,128 Wisconsinites signed up for health insurance on Healthcare.gov. This is Wisconsin’s highest enrollment since the 2018 period and an increase of 8,919 enrollees over the last period.

“It’s exciting to see thousands of Wisconsinites get the high-quality health care coverage they need for themselves and their families,” said Insurance Commissioner Nathan Houdek. “The work of our Health Care Coverage Partnership has helped connect stakeholders across the state to enroll more Wisconsinites in this coverage.”

Governor Tony Evers launched the DHS OCI Health Care Coverage Partnership in 2019 to improve coordination around outreach and education, increase enrollment and health insurance literacy, and improve enrollment retention. In 2020, this partnership launched WisCovered.com as an accessible resource for consumers to get connected with enrollment information. During this Open Enrollment Period, over 43,000 Wisconsinites visited the WisCovered.com website. The information on WisCovered.com is available in English, Spanish, and Hmong and the website’s pages were viewed over 1,000 times in a language other than English.

“We are proud of our competitive and reliable health insurance market in Wisconsin and glad to be able to provide a resource like WisCovered.com to share information about that marketplace and connect consumers with enrollment assistance,” said Commissioner Houdek. “Certified application counselors, navigators, and insurance agents all pitched in throughout this period to connect consumers with the right health coverage and we are grateful to all the individuals around the state who helped get more people covered.”

The period ended on January 15, 2023, but individuals may still qualify for special enrollment periods throughout the year due to their personal circumstances. Individuals who have recently lost health coverage, gotten married, or had a baby may qualify. Additionally, tribal members and their families may enroll in coverage on the marketplace at any time. Wisconsinites can find out if they qualify for a special enrollment period by calling (877) 947-2211 or finding free local help through Covering Wisconsin.
