Marshfield Clinic Health System exploring merger with Essentia Health 

Marshfield Clinic Health System is exploring a merger with Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health, the systems announced Wednesday.

They’ve signed a memorandum of understanding “to evaluate how the two organizations might combine to form an integrated regional health system,” according to a statement.

The 25-hospital system would span four states – Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and North Dakota – and include 3,500 providers and 150 sites of care.

“These are two of the premier health systems in the country, looking to come together to serve rural communities and beyond,” Marshfield Clinic Health System CEO Dr. Susan Turney said in a statement. “When I look at Essentia, I see an organization with world-class expertise that complements our own.”

“I have known and admired the work of Marshfield Clinic for more than 30 years,” Essentia CEO Dr. David Herman said. “I have always appreciated their ability to advance the well-being of the communities they serve.”
