Insurance leaders discussed the impact of COVID-19, health costs, technology, health disparities and more during a virtual panel. July 13, 2021 – Addressing Health Inequities Beyond COVID-19

COVID-19 exacerbated health inequities. As the pandemic begins to recede, these long-standing issues remain.

A Wisconsin Health News panel took a look at what more can be done to address the root causes of the growing health gaps in communities across Wisconsin.

Panelists were Theresa Jones, vice president, inclusion, diversity and equity at Children’s Wisconsin; Kevin Moore, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Wisconsin; Lisa Peyton-Caire, president of The Foundation for Black Women’s Wellness; Laura Waldvogel, CEO of Family Health La Clinica; and T.R. Williams, assistant deputy secretary at the Department of Health Services.

The COVID-19 crisis has transformed how healthcare is delivered. What changes are here to stay? How are hospitals responding to inequities further exacerbated by the crisis? What does the pandemic mean for healthcare costs?

A panel of hospital and health system CEOs address these questions at more at the 2020 Wisconsin Health News Hospital CEO Roundtable. Panelists were Damond Boatwright, SSM Health Wisconsin regional president; Chris Woleske, Bellin Health CEO; John Russell, Prairie Ridge Health CEO; and Cathy Jacobson, Froedtert Health CEO.

Sept. 10, 2020 – Health department roundtable: Combatting a global crisis from the local level

From contact tracing to overseeing the safety of school and businesses, local health departments have played an outsized role in combating the COVID-19 crisis. During a Wisconsin Health News Panel Series event, leaders from departments from across the state provided perspective on how they are responding to the pandemic, as well as what steps they are taking to address health disparities that have been further exposed by COVID-19.

Panelists included Milwaukee Health Commissioner Jeanette Kowalik, Florence County Health Officer Annette Seibold, Paula Tran Inzeo of the Dane County Board of Health, Wood County Health Officer Sue Kunferman and Winnebago County Health Officer Doug Gieryn.

Aug. 13, 2020 – Webinar with Exact Sciences CEO Kevin Conroy

When COVID-19 cases started mounting in the spring, Exact Sciences quickly shifted gears. Known for its colon cancer screening test, the Madison-based company played a key role in building out the state’s testing capacity.

During a Wisconsin Health News virtual newsmaker event on Aug. 13, CEO Kevin Conroy talked about the testing partnership, as well as discuss what missed screenings and delayed care throughout the pandemic could mean for the future of cancer care.

Amid calls for action and mass protests after the killing of George Floyd and others by the police, COVID-19 has taken a disproportionate toll on African American communities. Connecting both is systemic racism, which many experts consider one of society’s biggest public health threats.

At a Wisconsin Health News live, virtual event on June 25, Milwaukee Health Services CEO Dr. Tito Izard discussed what more can be done to address health inequities. He also talked about how COVID-19 is impacting the minority communities that his center serves.
