56,436 Wisconsinites have signed up for insurance through the federal marketplace

Another 15,000 people signed up for health insurance in January through the state's federally-facilitated health insurance exchange, bringing the total to 56,436 through Feb. 1, according to a report released Wednesdayby the Department of Health and Human Services. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin receives grant to help diagnose and treat patients with rare disorders

MILWAUKEE (2/12/14) – Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin has been awarded a $1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation in Los Angeles to support genetic research and testing. A team of researchers and physicians from Children’s Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) will develop a test system using gene editing to generate and functionally test the variant of interest. The goal is to develop a test to rapidly help diagnose patients and treat rare disorders, and build a system that can be used by other laboratories. Howard Jacob, PhD, Warren P. Knowles Professor of Genetics and director of the Human and Molecular Genetics Center at MCW will head the project.

Senate approves expanded newborn screening protocol, updated dentistry definition

The Wisconsin Senate approved legislation to increase the scope of newborn tests the Department of Health Services can require hospitals to administer, potentially including screening for congenital heart defects. The Senate also supported bills to update Wisconsin's definition of dentistry and require municipalities pay health insurance premiums for family members of police officers, emergency medical technicians and fire fighters who die on duty.
