The “Greenhealth Partner for Change” award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs. At a minimum, facilities applying for this award must be recycling 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are well along the way to mercury elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs in many different areas.

HSHS St. Vincent Hospital is recognized for recycling 36 percent of its total waste; HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center for recycling 35 percent of its total waste; and HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital for recycling 29 percent of its total waste. On average, hospitals across the country recycle 15 percent of their total waste.

“It’s a wonderful honor for our hospitals to receive the ‘Greenhealth Partner for Change’ award,” said Dan Rocheleau, Campus and Sustainability Facilitator for HSHS St. Vincent Hospital, HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center and HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital. “This is an awesome reflection of the caring and dedicated work our colleagues do each day. Their effort to ensure not only patient care, but to care for the environment as well is humbling.”

Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading health care community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care through tools, best practices and knowledge. The “Greenhealth Partner for Change” award is one of the organization’s Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor outstanding environmental achievements in the health care sector.
