A senior living provider based in West Allis has inked agreements with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a medication management company to improve healthcare for its residents.

Heritage Senior Living operates 15 senior living communities throughout the state and has an additional local under development. It provides a range of care, from independent living to assisted living and memory care.

Last week, the company announced a partnership with Medication Management Partners that aims to simplify the medication administration process and reduce medication-related errors for residents.

Heritage also announced an agreement in August with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to allow students from the College of Health Sciences and College of Nursing to work with their residents and research emerging technologies.

“We want to be a place of learning for all different students of all different areas,” said Jaime Schwingel, Heritage Senior Living’s vice president of quality and clinical operations.

The partnership aims to improve the quality of care that Heritage provides. They’re planning to look at ways to reduce the number of psychotropic medications residents receive by using virtual reality technology and improve mood and reduce the need for antidepressants through a social robot.

They’re also looking at partnering with Milwaukee-area hospitals to prevent unnecessary emergency room visits through telehealth. Other research focuses on improving residents’ sleep and falls prevention.
