Walker's plan to reject health care aid sparks rally

Activists and Democrats were out stumping Tuesday in opposition to Gov. Scott Walker’s plan to reject $12 billion in federal health care aid, a rejection that the governor’s office calls a move toward “entitlement reform.” Kevin Kane of Citizen Action of Wisconsin and Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay, held a news conference and rally Tuesday at the Brown County Courthouse to protest Walker’s plan. (GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE, 2/20)

Dentists plan to bring back non-covered services bill

Dentists plan to again pursue legislation this session that would prohibit insurance companies from setting fees for services they don't cover. They say the current practice forces providers to shift costs to patients with no insurance or drop out of an insurer's network. Insurers oppose the proposal and say disallowing it would drive up costs for consumers. (WHN, 2/19)

Taxpayers pay more under Walker Medicaid plan

If the federal government keeps its current commitments, Gov. Scott Walker’s plan for avoiding a full expansion of the BadgerCare program under the federal health care law would cost Wisconsin taxpayers roughly $250 million more through 2020, under preliminary estimates by the Legislature’s nonpartisan budget office. In addition to lower state costs, the full expansion of the Medicaid health program would also cover tens of thousands more people than the Republican governor’s proposal. (JOURNAL SENTINEL, 2/19)

Analyst says Walker's health care plan won't work

Gov. Scott Walker's plan to move more people off state Medicaid plans and onto private insurance through a federal marketplace won't result in cutting the number of uninsured Wisconsin residents in half as promised, an independent analyst said Thursday. Walker's numbers are inflated because poor people near the poverty line won't be able to afford private health insurance that requires individuals to pay for annual deductibles and other cost-sharing expenses, Bob Laszewski, a Washington-based insurance industry consultant, told The Associated Press after reviewing the Republican governor's plan.
