Health Committee leader opposes government intrusion in provider-patient relationship

The Legislature should steer clear of doctors' relationships with their patients and limit mandates on how hospitals can function, Assembly Health Committee Chair Erik Severson, R-Star Prairie, said at a recent Wisconsin Hospital Association Public Policy Council meeting, as reported in the association's weekly newsletter. Rural hospitals could lose special Medicare payments

The Wisconsin State Journal's David Wahlberg reports: "The broader proposal, by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, would strip special payment status from two-thirds of the nation's 1,328 critical access hospitals - those not considered to be in remote areas, including the 42 hospitals in Wisconsin." State medical records network preparing to go live

Guy Boulton of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports: "Wisconsin now has in place the basic building blocks for a statewide network that could enable hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and other health care settings to exchange key information from patients' medical records securely and effortlessly." Costs rise for osteopathic college

Dan Connell, a consultant recently hired to represent the Wisconsin College of Osteopathic Medicine, said in a recent letter to the Jefferson mayor and city council that the college will need to raise more than $100 million to open, staff and fund the operations of the college. Construction Begins at Site of New ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano

On Monday heavy construction and excavation equipment moved onto the site of the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano at County B and Highway 22. According to Matt Peterson, project manager at The Boldt Co. of Appleton, the project’s general contractor and construction management firm, the first tasks are site preparation work. “We started with removal of trees and existing storm water ponds. This week we start excavation and site utility work, including bringing water mains, storm lines and sanitary lines to the property.” In October, concrete footings and foundations will be poured and the winter months will bring steel erection. The new hospital is slated to open in early 2015.
